Biografía

Al contrario que su primo David, sí supo guarecerse del apellido y tener una carrera con un peculiar estilo, primero como cantautor y después en el cine. Su padre, Irving, un médico con mal carácter, no pertenecía al clan musical, aunque también escribía canciones en sus ratos libres, pero Randy solía refugiarse en su infancia escuchando componer a su tío Alfred. Educado en la Universidad de California, se matricula en piano, su instrumento esencial para la creación de unas canciones donde utiliza ritmos de los años 20, 30 y 40 como ragtime, swing, jazz, y blues, en la mejor tradición de los músicos negros de Nueva Orleáns; mientras que tras sus notas pegadizas siempre hay letras con cierto mensaje satírico.

Su celebridad hace que éstas canciones sean interpretadas por él mismo y artistas como Peggy Lee, Mick Jagger o Barbra Streisand. Su estancia en el mundo del cine le hace abandonar en parte su condición de artista pop y en los últimos años solo edita los albumnes “Land of Dreams” (1988) y “Bad Love” (1999).

Lo que mejor refleja su personalidad en las películas son unas recordadas canciones con su voz: "He Gives Us all His Love” (Cold Turkey), “Feels Like Home To Me” (Michael), “I Love To See You Smile” (Dulce hogar... a veces), “Tartine de merde” (Maverick), “A Fool in Love” (Los padres de ella), “You´ve Got a Friend in Me” (Toy Story), y “Make Up Your Mind” (Detrás de la noticia).

Socialmente preocupado por temas como el racismo y la insolidaridad, es hoy en día uno de los más respetados músicos del panorama norteamericano, con la suficiente paciencia y sentido del humor para soportar 14 nominaciones fallidas al Oscar e interpretar sus canciones en las ceremonias, hasta que, finalmente, a la décimo quinta fue a la vencida con la canción “If I Didn´t Have You” (para Monstruos, S.A.).

Rhino Records editó en el 2002 una lujosa caja con cuatro compactos denominada “Guilty: 30 Years of Randy Newman”, donde se hace un exhaustivo repaso a todo su obra; y ese mismo año, el teatro Repertory, de la costa Sur de California, montó el musical “The Education of Randy Newman”, basado en sus composiciones.

Otros trabajos: En su trayectoria como artista pop ha escrito cientos de canciones, algunas de ellas incluidas en otras películas: “You Can Leave Your Hat On” primero para el strip tease de Kim Basinger en 9 semanas y media, interpretada por Joe Cocker, y después en Full Monty; “Lonely At The Top” en Tienes un e-m@il; y “Louisiana 1927” para El escándalo Blaze.
En sus discos están otras como “Short People”, “Naked Man”, “Political Science”, “Sail Away”, “Rednecks”, “Mama Told Me Not To Come”, “I Want Everyone To Like Me”, “I Love You Just the Way You Are”, “No New Tale to Tell”, “In Germany Before the War".

En los años 60 escribe un LP instrumental llamado “Peyton Place”, interpretado por la Randy Newman Orchestra e inspirándose en la serie de televisión del mismo título; y magistral resulta su ópera rock, “Fausto”, registrada en 1995 con el siguiente reparto: Randy Newman (diablo), James Taylor (el señor), Don Henley (Fausto), Elton John (el ángel Rick), Linda Ronstadt (Margaret) y Bonnie Raitt (Martha).

Además de algunos artistas que han interpretado sus canciones de película como:
Peter Gabriel. “That´ll Do” en Babe, el cerdito en la ciudad;
Susan Sarandon y Sally Stevens, que pusieron sus voces en James y el melocotón gigante;
Steve Martin, Martin Short, y Chevy Chase eran los cantantes de Tres amigos, película en la que el propio Newman participa en el guión;
Sara McLachlan (“When She Loved Me”) y el grupo Raiders in the Sky (“Woody´s Roundup”), ambos en Toy Story 2;
Natalie Cole, Scott Bakula, y Kathy Najimy, interpretan varias en Cats Don´t Dance.
