Biografía

Su padre era un cantante que inmediatamente observó el talento de su hijo, y le consiente abandonar la escuela y formar una banda donde hace de todo: arreglista, pianista, y vocalista de canciones populares.

Comienza a componer a finales de los años 20, siendo una de sus primeras melodías “Get Happy”, con letras de Ted Koehler, que llega a interpretarse en el mítico “Cotton Club” de Harlem. Escribe para musicales de Broadway con temas como “You Said It” (1931), “Life Begins at 8:40” (1934), “Hooray for What?” (1937), “Bloomer Girl” (1944), “St. Louis Woman” (1946) y “Saratoga” (1959), colaborando en las letras con Johnny Mercer, Ira Gershwin, y Truman Capote, entre otros.

Hyman Arluck (como así se llama realmente), fue uno de los pioneros del cine musical con canciones como “God´s Country” (de "Los hijos de la farándula"); y “Tell Me, Tell Me Evening Star" and "Willow In The Wind" (las únicas que compuso para el film "Kismet"), pero sin duda será recordado eternamente por las canciones de la banda sonora de "El mago de Oz", entre ellas la insuperable “Over the Rainbow” (Oscar en 1939) interpretada por Judy Garland, con quien volvería a coincidir quince años después en "Ha nacido una estrella".

Podemos destacar otras canciones inolvidables de su reportorio como: “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea”; “I´ve Got the World on a String”; “Let´s Fall in Love”; “Lydia the Tatoo´d Lady”; “Andiamo”; “Blues in the Night” (con letra de Johnny Mercer); “Lover and Learn” (de la película "Sylvia"); “I Promise You”; “Let´s Fall in Love”; “The Man That Got Away” (melancólica canción de "Ha nacido una estrella"); “Stormy Weather”; e “It´s Only a Paper Moon”, popularizada más tarde en la película "Luna de papel".
